Down the dirt road…
A road leading to a couple of my favourite places is closed at the moment, so I’ve heard. It will be closed for a couple of months.
Why? They’re laying bitumen on it… 😔
I guess that’s a good thing, but I kinda like it how it is, or was as the case is now.
I have fond memories of this road, it’s the only road to a salt lake I’m particularly fond of, and my most recent experience on it was racing down it in the night to escape a bushfire that had swung around to head in our direction. I was following another vehicle that was camped where I had intended to camp too. The fire started heading our way and that was it, both cars were packed up and gone in minutes, a caravan following behind us from another campsite down the road.
There’s something thrilling about heading down a dirt road - it sparks thoughts and feelings of excitement, adventure and exploration; it makes me think of the unknown, the unexplored, full of mystery and discovery.
They’re like a magnet. It could be a dirt road to a favourite location or to somewhere I’ve never been before.
I’m always wondering… what’s down that way, what cool and exciting finds are there?
Or… what’s changed, what’s been happening down there lately and what new exciting anything might I find? Has anyone discovered my favourite campsite or location and will it be crowded now?
While I understand progress happens, and is great for the towns economy with more travellers visiting the towns at each end of it, and creates a new route through to the Great Southern region, a part of me will miss this well maintained dirt road that takes you through stunning part of the Goldfields, and past some incredible places.
There will still be dirt tracks though, leading off the nearly sealed road, with plenty of treasures just waiting to be discovered.
I guess I’ll be heading back there soon 😉
