Heading home…

When you’ve been away for a while, whether its for a couple of days or a couple of weeks, or if you’re really lucky maybe a month or two..  and you’ve had an amazing time,  the lasts become more... noticeable.

You’re more aware and more, maybe present I guess.

On the last day you either pack as much last minute ‘holidaying’ in, or have a slow, relaxing day; either way you’re soaking up the last aspects of your holiday experience.

‘C’mon kid, let’s roll. Its time to cut a track and hit the open road’, cried Jack, ‘hook on and lets go!’

Who do you think you’re calling a kid, buddy? I’ve got a couple of years on you, so just settle down, straighten up so I can hook on behind you and we can get outta here’ replied Jilly.

The yellow bag…

There it lay, on the dirty, rocky and corrugated road, a huge cloud of dust smothering it as the filthy air slowly settled onto and around the yellow bin bag, still carrying its precious cargo.

Where am I, the bag wondered, why am I here? Where’s my yellow Jeep and why has it left me behind?

Time to get toasty…

It was an unusual stormy Friday night after a too long hot summer, and I’d just pulled a blanket out of the cupboard, settled on the couch with my laptop for the next few hours.

Pretty apt for a spookily wild night, perfect for watching while snuggled under one of my fav camping blankets, with my little camp lights out ready in case the power went out.

In the moment…

Driving through a timeless landscape, half expecting a wagon to roll through the thick white grasses, picking its way around the scattered stands of trees.

Up ahead in the distance, a catch a glimpse of a fox’s tail disappearing into the long grass. My first ever sighting of a fox.

Years later, finally….

Time to go home…

I love being on the road.

Exploring country roads & dirt tracks, looking for my kind of treasure in those big wide open spaces.

I like getting home too.

Back out the back…

Sketchy snake tracks in front of me on the dusty trail; they’re just little snakes, Bob said with a cheeky grin and a twinkling eye. Bob’s the caretaker out there, more about him next time ;)

‘Rubbish’, I replied, and we agreed to disagree on the size of the snakes that left those tracks… those many many tracks.

I made up a little song to sing as I walked, hoping to scare the snakes well away from my path.

A step back in time…

A step back in time…

Subtle hints of sandalwood drifted on the air, there’s nothing musty about this space…

Piano chords float across the room, joined by a sweetly singing violin, with the warm tenor notes of a cello wrapping around the music…

The lighting dims and lifts with the music… a symphony of sound and light…

I could stay in this library all night… pick a book and curl up on a stair, and just stay in here…

The beach…

Wandering out to the water’s edge in my jandals (thongs if you’re Australian, flip flops if you’re from anywhere else except NZ) I stepped carefully, half expecting to fall on my butt at any time…

Choices…

Thwack! Gotcha! Little bugger. Slap whack!

Was I getting better at my newly taken up sport or were the flies that somehow sneaked their way into the camper just too hot and drowsy to avoid my fly swat?
