Out the back with Jack…
The stories behind the images…
Travel tales and adventures out & about with Jack
The first ‘Jack’ was my 2015 Jeep Wrangler Overland and, with my camera and a fleet of drones, we have explored many places together. The spirit of Jack has now moved to my new vehicle, a 2025 Toyota LandCruiser Troopcarrier, but the adventures continue…
What if…
Jack and I have been a team for a while now, coming up eight years in November. We’ve done a lot of kilometres together and whenever I’ve driven us into a sticky or sink-y or hairy situation, Jack has driven us right back out with no hassle.
Of course Im convinced my encouragement has helped a lot…
“C’mon buddy you’ve got this, I swear I won’t do it again…”
Ducted up…
Over a shared breakfast the next morning I was told about a place called Jokers Tunnel, just outside Yalgoo. Having decided the pickings where I was looking to fly were a little slimmer than I had hoped for and knowing I would soon be out of action for a couple of months at least, I changed my plans and headed back towards Paynes Find and a rather large lake near there, travelling along the road to Yalgoo.
The tent experience
There’s something special about waking up in a tent, with only a layer or two of canvas between you and the great outdoors. Part of that experience is what you hear… & what you don’t.
The long way…
Taking a few days off giving me a long weekend to escape the city, it was with glee that Jack and I hit the road.
The grasses were green everywhere, the lakes at least half full, and the world looked a little less dusty than usual.
Hanging out…
Driving on Aussie regional and remote roads a lot, I’m used to looking out for animals wandering - or hopping onto the roads. So I kept my eyes peeled…. and looked… and looked. I saw plenty of signs warning of bison wandering onto the road, but didn’t see a single one. I saw a gray wolf, and a silver wolf…. but no bears, no bison. Nada.
Far too long…
Far too long… since we witnessed the sun’s explosion of colour across the land as it sets on another day.
… and far too long since we sat out under the stars and marvelled at their brilliance, and the sheer magnitude of how many billions we can see…
I wanna be a cowgirl…
If I had my way, I’d be in jeans and boots everyday. Why the heck I live in the ‘burbs I have no idea.
Oceans apart…
‘Stop the world, I wanna get off’ we say when we need a bit of space to breathe, to pull our thoughts and heads together.
For me that space has always been best found at the beach. Any beach will do, preferably the closest to wherever I am at the time.
