I was flying over a salt lake during the lockdowns and the shapes in the surface stopped me. A group of figures — you can see it immediately once you see it — rising up together, arms raised, faces to the sky. The lake didn't know what was happening in the world. It just made this, in salt and ochre and whatever the earth felt like doing that day. Central Wheatbelt, Western Australia.
Rise Up is an aerial salt lake image with an accidental political energy I wasn't expecting to find out there in the middle of nowhere. The shapes are entirely natural.
